💰 Fee Comparison: The Real Difference

This is closer than you might expect. Let's look at what you'd actually pay on a $1,000 trade:

CB

Coinbase Advanced

Using Pro interface

$1,000 market buy $6.00
$1,000 limit buy $4.00
Annual cost ($1K/mo) $72/year
K

Kraken Pro

Using Pro interface

$1,000 market buy $8.00
$1,000 limit buy $4.00
Annual cost ($1K/mo) $96/year

💵 Annual Cost Difference

Trading $1,000/month with market orders, Kraken Pro costs $24/year more than Coinbase Advanced. At $5,000/month, that's $120/year. With limit orders, both charge 0.40%, so the cost is the same.

Important note: both exchanges have "simple" and "pro" modes. The simple modes charge ~1.49% on Coinbase and 1% plus a spread on Kraken (1.5% on custom orders). Always use the pro/advanced interface—it's not actually harder, just toggle the setting.

🔒 Security: Both Are Excellent

Neither exchange has ever been hacked. Both have strong track records. But there are differences:

Coinbase Security

  • Publicly traded (NASDAQ: COIN) — Financial transparency via SEC filings
  • Crime insurance — Covers digital assets in hot storage against theft
  • 98% cold storage — Most customer funds stored offline
  • Coinbase One — $1M account protection warranty for subscribers

Kraken Security

  • Proof of Reserves — Cryptographically verifiable audits (pioneered by Kraken)
  • 99.99% uptime — Industry-leading reliability
  • Never hacked since 2011 — Oldest major exchange with clean record
  • Air-gapped cold storage — Physical security measures

Our take: Kraken's Proof of Reserves is more transparent than Coinbase's traditional audits. You can verify your funds exist on-chain. But Coinbase's public company status means regulatory oversight that Kraken doesn't have.

📞 Customer Support: Kraken Wins

This might surprise you: Coinbase has 24/7 phone support, but Kraken's live chat is actually better.

Kraken's support team is consistently rated #1 in the industry. Response times are typically under 5 minutes. Reddit and Twitter are full of stories about Kraken support going above and beyond.

Coinbase improved dramatically in 2024-2025, but free users still report long wait times. The "Coinbase One" subscription ($29.99/mo) gets you priority support—which effectively creates a two-tier system.

🎯 When to Use Each Exchange

CB

Choose Coinbase

  • You're completely new to crypto and want the simplest experience
  • You live in New York (Kraken isn't available)
  • You want to stake crypto and earn yield
  • You're interested in Base L2 and on-chain apps
  • Phone support is important to you
  • You buy less than $500/month (fees matter less)
K

Choose Kraken

  • You trade actively and want 0.20% fees on stablecoin pairs
  • You want margin trading (up to 5x leverage)
  • Customer support quality is your priority
  • You value Proof of Reserves transparency
  • You're okay waiting 7 days for first withdrawal
  • You're not in New York or a restricted state

🔄 When to Switch from Coinbase to Kraken

Many people start on Coinbase (it's the default recommendation everywhere) and later realize they're overpaying. Here's the transition point:

The $500/Month Rule

If you're buying more than $500/month on Coinbase's simple screen (~1.49%), moving to Kraken Pro limit orders (0.40%) saves you about $5/month in fees—roughly $65 a year. Coinbase Advanced charges the same 0.40% maker rate, so the saving comes from leaving the simple screen.

The switch is easy:

  1. Create a Kraken account and complete verification (takes ~20 minutes)
  2. Link your bank via Plaid
  3. Transfer existing crypto from Coinbase to Kraken (network fees apply)
  4. Make all future purchases on Kraken

One caveat: Kraken holds your first ACH deposit for 7 days before you can withdraw crypto. Plan accordingly if you need to move funds quickly.

The Bottom Line

Both exchanges are excellent—you can't go wrong with either. Coinbase is the better starting point for beginners. Kraken is the better long-term home for active traders.

The smart path: Start on Coinbase for the easy onboarding, then graduate to Kraken once you're trading $500+/month and comfortable with the platform.

Kraken is our pick for most US buyers

Use Kraken Pro (0.40% maker / 0.80% taker) instead of the app's instant buy (1% + spread). It's the same account.
