The short version
- Kraken serves US residents except in New York and Maine; a few other states have transfer limits.
- ACH through Plaid is free with a $1 minimum, but deposits are held from withdrawal for 7 days.
- The instant Buy crypto screen charges 1% plus a spread; debit card funding adds $0.25 + 3.75%.
- A limit order on Kraken Pro starts at a 0.40% maker fee, with the same login and balances.
- Turn on passkey 2FA before you deposit, and test any withdrawal with a small amount first.
To buy bitcoin on Kraken in the US, you create an account, verify your identity, link a bank account through Plaid (free ACH), then tap Buy crypto, pick BTC and confirm. The whole thing usually takes under an hour, and most of that is verification. The part worth slowing down for is the fee: the simple buy screen costs more than placing the same order on Kraken Pro.
Below is the full walkthrough for a first-time buyer, with every fee and limit taken from Kraken's own fee schedule and support pages as of late October 2026.
Before you start: can you use Kraken where you live?
Kraken serves most of the country, but not all of it. Its residency page says it does not offer services to residents of New York and Maine. A few other states have partial limits worth knowing before you sign up:
- Indiana: Kraken's residency page lists crypto and cash transfers as unavailable.
- Louisiana, Massachusetts and Utah: cash (fiat) transfers are unavailable, so bank deposits and withdrawals won't work the usual way.
- Texas and New Hampshire: no EUR deposits, balances or EUR trading pairs. That rarely matters if you're buying with dollars.
Rules like these change, so check Kraken's "Where can I use Kraken?" page before you send money. If your state is off the list, our state-by-state exchange guide covers alternatives.
You'll also want a government-issued photo ID, a recent document showing your address, and a bank account you can link online.
Step by step: your first bitcoin purchase
- Get the real app or site. Type kraken.com yourself or install the Kraken app from the App Store or Google Play. Kraken's official apps are Kraken, Kraken Pro, Krak and Kraken Wallet. Anything else using the name is not Kraken. Bookmark the sign-in page so you never reach it through a search ad.
- Create the account. Kraken asks for your email and country of residence first. Use a strong, unique password. Kraken's minimum is 12 characters and it suggests 15 or more.
- Verify your identity. Kraken generally asks for a valid government ID and a proof-of-address document, and sometimes more. Its support page says verification usually finishes in under 30 minutes, though manual reviews take longer. When we checked, Kraken was showing a notice about delays on new accounts, so don't plan a time-sensitive purchase around day one.
- Turn on two-factor authentication. Do this before any money arrives. Kraken recommends passkeys over every other 2FA method because they resist phishing. Our exchange safety guide explains why this matters.
- Add funds. For most people, the cheapest route is ACH through Plaid. It's free, has a $1 minimum and lands almost instantly. The catch: Kraken holds ACH deposits from withdrawal for 7 days.
- Buy the bitcoin. Choose Buy crypto, pick Bitcoin (BTC), and enter a dollar amount. Kraken's buy page lists a $10 minimum. Preview the order and read the fee line before you confirm.
- Decide where it lives. Your BTC shows up in your Kraken balance right away. You can leave it there or withdraw it to a wallet you control. More on that below.
Ready to set up your account?
Sign-up and verification are free. You only pay fees when you fund with a card or place a trade.
Open a Kraken accountWhat it costs to buy bitcoin on Kraken
You pay in two places: how you fund the account, and how you place the trade.
Funding fees (USD, US accounts)
| Method | Kraken fee | Minimum | Speed | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ACH via Plaid | Free | $1 | Near-instant | 7-day hold before you can withdraw |
| FedWire | Free | $1 | 0–1 business days | Your bank may charge to send a wire |
| Debit card | $0.25 + 3.75% | $10 | Near-instant | Expensive; card buys can carry a 72-hour hold |
| PayPal | Processing fee shown at checkout | $1 | Near-instant | 72-hour withdrawal hold |
Figures are from Kraken's cash deposit support article, updated October 20, 2026. On a $500 debit-card deposit, the card fee alone would be $19 ($0.25 plus 3.75% of $500). The same $500 by ACH costs nothing to deposit.
Trading fees
The simple Buy crypto button in the Kraken app and on kraken.com charges a 1% fee on instant and recurring buys and 1.5% on custom orders. Very small instant trades carry a flat fee of up to $2 in place of the 1%. On top of the fee, the price you see includes a spread. Kraken says the spread varies with volatility, asset, order size and account activity, and it doesn't publish a fixed number.
So a $500 instant buy costs $5 in trading fee plus whatever spread is built into the quote. Kraken shows the total on the confirmation screen, and that's the number to trust.
Kraken's membership, Kraken+, waives the trading fee on up to $10,000 a month of buys, sells and converts in the main app. It costs $4.99 a month (monthly billing and the 30-day free trial are only offered in the mobile app) or $49.99 a year. Spreads and card fees still apply, and it doesn't cover Kraken Pro trades. It only pays off if you buy often enough that 1% fees would top the membership cost.
The cheaper route: buying on Kraken Pro
Kraken Pro uses the same login and the same balances, but you trade on an order book with maker-taker pricing instead of paying the 1% instant fee and spread. New accounts start at the bottom volume tier. The published schedule puts that tier at 0.40% for maker orders and 0.80% for taker orders, and rates drop as your 30-day volume or assets on the platform grow.
A maker order is a limit order that waits on the book. A taker order fills immediately against someone else's order. If you place a limit buy slightly below the current price and it fills, you pay the maker rate. On $500, that's about $2 at 0.40%, compared with $5 plus spread on the instant screen.
The trade-off is effort. Pro shows charts, an order book and order types that can feel like a cockpit the first time. If you're buying once a month, the difference may be worth five minutes of learning. Our Kraken fees breakdown and maker vs. taker explainer go deeper.
Placing a limit buy on Pro
- Switch apps. On the web, use the app switcher in the top-right corner, or install the separate Kraken Pro app.
- Open the BTC/USD market. Search for BTC and pick the USD pair.
- Choose Limit, then Buy. Enter your price and the amount. A price at or a little under the current best bid is more likely to rest on the book as a maker order.
- Review and submit. The order sits open until it fills or you cancel it. Cancelled orders that never fill cost nothing.
Recurring buys
If you'd rather buy a fixed amount every week or month, Kraken offers recurring buys in the main app. They carry the same 1% fee as instant buys, so a $100 weekly purchase costs about $1 per buy plus spread. People who automate larger amounts are the ones most likely to come out ahead with Kraken+. For a wider look at automated buying, see our recurring buys comparison.
After you buy: keep it on Kraken or move it?
Both are legitimate choices with different risks.
- Leaving it on Kraken is simplest. You can sell quickly, and your purchase record stays in one place. You are trusting Kraken with custody. Kraken publishes periodic proof-of-reserves reviews; its June 30, 2026 snapshot showed BTC reserves at 102.9% of client balances. A snapshot is not a guarantee, though, and Kraken's own page lists what the review can't prove.
- Withdrawing to your own wallet takes the exchange out of the picture, but you become responsible for your keys and backups. Kraken supports BTC withdrawals on the Bitcoin network and Lightning, and charges a flat withdrawal fee that it shows before you confirm.
If you withdraw, send a small test amount first and confirm it arrived before you move the rest.
Keep records from day one
Buying bitcoin isn't a taxable event, but selling, trading or spending it later is. Starting with digital assets acquired after 2025 and held in the same account, US brokers like Kraken must report your cost basis to the IRS on Form 1099-DA when you sell. If you move coins in from another platform or out to a wallet, that link can break, and you'll need your own records. Export your Kraken transaction history now and then, and keep it with your tax files.
Your first-purchase checklist
- Confirm your state is served and check any limits that apply to you.
- Install the official app or bookmark kraken.com, and turn on passkey 2FA.
- Fund by ACH unless speed is worth the 3.75% card fee to you.
- Use the instant buy screen if you want simple; use a Pro limit order if you want cheaper.
- Read the confirmation screen. The fee and price shown there are what you'll actually pay.
- Decide on storage, and do a test withdrawal before moving everything.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum amount of bitcoin I can buy on Kraken?
Kraken's buy page lists a $10 minimum purchase. You buy a fraction of a bitcoin, so you never need to afford a whole coin. Very small instant trades carry a flat fee of up to $2 in place of the usual 1%, so tiny purchases are relatively expensive.
How long does Kraken verification take?
Kraken says verification usually takes under 30 minutes, but manual reviews can take longer. In October 2026 Kraken was showing a notice about delays on new accounts, so give yourself some buffer.
Why can't I withdraw my bitcoin right after buying it?
If you funded with ACH through Plaid, Kraken holds that deposit from withdrawal for 7 days. Card and PayPal funding can trigger a 72-hour hold. Wires through FedWire have no hold, according to Kraken's deposit options page.
Can I buy bitcoin on Kraken with a credit card?
Kraken's buy page lists credit and debit cards as payment options, and its US deposit table shows a debit card fee of $0.25 plus 3.75%. Card purchases cost far more than ACH, and your card issuer may treat a crypto purchase as a cash advance. Check with your issuer first.
Is buying on Kraken Pro actually cheaper?
Usually, yes. The instant screen charges 1% plus a spread, while Pro's entry tier is 0.40% for maker orders and 0.80% for taker orders on the published schedule, with no added spread beyond the order book. A resting limit order is where most of the savings come from.
